Oilers jump to 2-0 lead after second period
Edmonton, AB (Sports Network) - Fernando Pisani and Raffi Torres tallied a goal apiece to stake the Edmonton Oilers to a 2-0 lead over the Carolina Hurricanes through two periods in Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Finals at Rexall Place.
The Hurricanes hold a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven series and can win the Stanley Cup for the first time in franchise history.
Carolina, though, was outshot 11-4 in the period and Edmonton has outshot the Hurricanes 21-7 for the game.
Carolina netminder Cam Ward has 19 saves through two periods, while Edmonton's Jussi Markkanen has made just seven stops.
Pisani scored 1:45 into the second stanza while on the power play after his backhand shot deflected off a Carolina defender in the slot and past Ward for a 1-0 lead.
Torres redirected a slap shot by Steve Staios past Ward at 9:54 through the middle stanza.
Carolina, however, got a lift, when left wing Erik Cole, who was not supposed to play again this season, took the ice for Game 6. Cole suffered a serious neck injury in early March.
Cole had been skating with the club since the team reached the Eastern Conference Finals against Buffalo, but after results of a CT scan, the Hurricanes announced Cole was finished for the season.
Cole, though, was cleared to play by doctors on Friday.
Hurricanes center Doug Weight, however, missed Game 6 with an upper body injury.
Weight was caught between Torres and Chris Pronger in the opening minute of the third period of Carolina's 4-3 overtime loss in Game 5. Though it appeared Weight's right shoulder took the brunt of the check, he returned to the bench during the game, but didn't take another shift.
Weight's status for Game 7, if necessary, is also uncertain.
Carolina defenseman Aaron Ward was also injured in Game 5, but he practiced with the team on Friday and is playing in Game 6.
