Last week, Tampa Bay coach Jon Gruden implored his Bucs to support Chris Simms while he struggled with the offense.
On Monday, with Simms in the hospital recovering from a splenectomy, Gruden said the team will now have to rally around rookie Bruce Gradkowski, who replaces Simms as the starting quarterback.
“He’s going to take his lumps. He’s going to make some bad decisions that rookies do,” quarterback Luke McCown said. “We just have to help him prepare as a starter.”
The Bucs have a Week 4 Bye and then travel to take on New Orleans Sunday, Oct. 8.
