There are days when a sensational horse comes along, and pulls a complete and utter upset against far better competition that blows the minds of seasoned handicappers... Today was not one of these days...
The undefeated Discreet Cat will no doubt be challenged at some point in his career, but Sunday's $155,800 Jerome Stakes Handicap (Gr. II) simply wasn't it. In a race where trainers were falling over themselves to scratch their horses against such an insurmountable foe (no pun), the Jerome Stakes proved to be a "No Duh?" of sorts.
Once Discreet Cat broke to the front, it was akin to a Sunday country drive for this incredible thoroughbred, which cleanly and effortlessly smoothed his way un-challenged to the finish line. To boot, Discreet cat carried 124 pounds, 10 pounds more than his rivals.
So what's next for Discreet Cat?
"We'll keep our options open for the Breeders' Cup or Cigar Mile; we'll probably give it 10 days, and then decide with Sheikh Mohammed." [Saeed bin Suroor - Trainer]
