Second of June, a candidate for the $5 million Breeders' Cup Classic, suffered a fatal injury during a workout at Churchill Downs, and had to be euthanized later that morning.
The 5-year-old son of Louis Quatorze was nearing the completion of a one-mile work in prep for Saturday's Jockey Club Gold Cup at Belmont Park when he injured his right hind ankle. A strong performance in the Cup would've earned him a start in the BC Classic, which would have been the final race of his career.
Second of June's entire career was plagued with numerous injuries, sadly this was his last.
"He gave us a lot of good times, it just wasn't meant to be." - [Bill Cesare - Trainer]
This sudden loss will surely change the field of the Breeders' Cup Classic. Our hearts go out to the Cearse family.
