Might Strong Contender be a contender in the 2006 Breeders' Cup Classic? It seemed more likely that this 3 year-old colt might be a horse in the running after his impressive victory and great speed in the Super Derby at Louisiana Downs on Saturday.
Strong Contender ($7.60) overtook favorite Lawyer Ron and went on to win by a length in this Grade 2, $500,000 horse race. This is the colt's fourth win in seven career starts, and his bankroll now stands at $621,000.
While trainer John Ward and owner John Oxley have yet to commit their horse to the Classic, they're certainly upbeat about Strong Contender's performance. "He's really matured in the last two or three weeks," John Ward said recently. It's hard not to believe that this new-found maturity won't carry Strong Contender to Churchill Downs on November 4th.
