ROME, June 23, 2006 (AFP) - Italian football league president Adriano Galliani resigned Thursday after being charged in the match-fixing scandal that has rocked Serie A. Galliani, who is also the vice-president of AC Milan, one of four clubs charged with sporting fraud earlier Thursday, announced his resignation in a statement but denied any wrongdoing. "I have decided to resign from my position as president of the Italian football league, but I wish to make it clear that this can not in any way be interepreted as an admission of responsibility," Galliani said. "The charges against me are an injustice and I reiterate that I am a total stranger to this affair," he added. Earlier Thursday, Italian football federation prosecutor Stefano Palazzi announced that 30 individuals or clubs, including AC Milan, Juventus, Lazio and Fiorentina, would go on trial next week on charges of sporting fraud. The charges are the latest development in a crisis which erupted last month after a newspaper published transcripts of telephone conversations between Juventus general manager Luciano Moggi and the head of the Italian referees' association, where Moggi requested certain officials assigned to certain games. Moggi has since resigned. All four clubs implicated could face relegation if found guilty.
