Jamie Spencer brought 5-1 co-favourite Red Evie with a power-packed late run to land the Sandringham Handicap.
Makderah appeared to be travelling best of all with a quarter mile left to run, but Jeremy Noseda's La Mottie soon emerged as a major threat, looking the likeliest winner when hitting the front inside the final furlong.
But Red Evie finished very strongly down the outside to deny La Mottie and provide Spencer with a near 213-1 treble, with Makderah back in third.
Winning trainer Michael Bell said: "She's pretty useful and she was not tested in her wins.
"I was a bit nervous after she won a handicap at Leicester but the handicapper only put her up 2lb and she's better than a handicapper. She might go for the Falmouth and she's joy to train.
"I might have a jockey problem as Jamie might ride Soviet Song, but things change and he likes this filly."
Spencer added: "The horse got a nightmare of a journey and I was following Darryll (Holland). He got murdered as well but anyway we won."
However, there was a sting in the tail for Spencer as he picked up a four-day ban for careless riding (July 2-5). |
